Portugal. ATM issues 2014

Farewell to Amiel, Crouzet & SMD equipment in Portugal

It was only a matter of time.
Since 2010, Correios de Portugal has been reorganizing its ATM vending machines, replacing or removing the machines installed at some of its post offices and outdoor postal kiosks. For the most part, they targeted distributors with a history of maintenance problems or which were underutilized. Some machines were removed after the closure of the post office branch, or they advantage taken of the refurbishment of the post offices, and its new company graphic image, to install the latest postal kiosk.
Many Crouzet postal kiosks were removed between late September and early October 2010. Although these machines were installed inside the post offices and were well maintained, they had been in operation for over 20 years.
Many Amiel and SMD units, had been in service, outside, for more than 15 years, and were gradually replaced by the newest Newvision postal kiosks.
Rossio post office, in Évora. The post office remodelling included the replacement of the older Crouzet postal kiosk in service, with a new Newvision E-Post 2000 postal kiosk, located outdoor, near the letter boxes.

This transition culminated in May 2014 with a rationalization-of-equipment project carried out by Correios. This project aims to :-
(1) standardize technology, by removing, permanently, all the older Amiel, Crouzet and SMD machines still in service, and keeping operational only the Newvision E-Post postal kiosks, and
(2) relocating the Newvision equipment to the most used and convenient locations for customers.

Although it is correct action from a business point of view, which will optimize Correios resources, it is a great loss to the world of ATM collecting. Portugal was the only country where it was still possible to obtain ATMs (and receipts !) with non-thermal printing, issued by various machine types and with different printing varieties. Among them, the ATMs issued by Crouzet postal kiosks, and possibly the most appreciated by collectors.

To reduce the negative business impact of this decision on the philatelic service, which until now sold ATMs with four printing varieties, Correios decided that future releases will be only from a Newvision E-Post distributor but, to compensate, each release will be composed of three different designs.

(In 1999, the series dedicated to dinosaurs in Portugal, one of the most beloved by collectors, was made up of four different designs, as was the series devoted to pets, in 2005, although in this case there were two designs for Crouzet machines, and another two for Amiel, SMD & Newvision equipment).

ATM series 'European elections 2014'

The first set of ATM issues, of this new phase, is dedicated to the European Elections 2014, and went on sale on Monday, May 5th 2014.
On the same date, Correios planned to disable all the Amiel, Crouzet and SMD vending machines still in service in Portugal, and therefore the new series should be obtained only from Newvision equipment. But, as you can guess, some machines continued in service over the following days and weeks, and the new set could also be obtained, occasionally, from the Amiel and SMD equipment.

The series consists of three different designs that are repeated throughout the rolls of labels (see image below), and are dedicated to the slogan of the information and awareness campaign launched by the European Parliament: AGIR. REAGIR. DECIDIR. (ACT. REACT. IMPACT.). Faced with increasingly disenchanted and distrustful citizens to the European project, this slogan was intended to emphasize the importance of voting to determine the future shape of the European Union.

The series design is by AF Atelier, a Portuguese graphic design and communication company.
The rolls of self-adhesive labels were printed by offset, and manufactured by the Portuguese company Litho Formas Portuguesa. The size of the labels is 55 x 30 mm., and include a preprinted sequential number on the back of the waxed paper.

On the date of issue, Newvision E-Post 2000 postal kiosks allowed the direct printing of ATMs with 7 programmed values (see table below) - 5 for ordinary mail or Correio normal (0.42 - 0.57 - 0.62 - 0.72 - 0.80 EUR), and two for urgent mail or Correio Azul (0.50 - 2.20 EUR), using push button selection.
However, it is possible to obtain ATMs with many other values from theE-Post 2000 M postal kiosks. These kiosks are equipped with a scale, and users can issue variable value stamps according to weight, destination, and type of shipping required.

All the postal kiosks in service are fitted with black ink cartridges, although it is possible that, in error, one machine could, temporarily, use a purple-violet ink cartridge, and issue ATMs in this colour

ATM series '35 Aniversário Serviço Nacional de Saúde'

In 2014, the second set of ATM issues is dedicated, once again, to a social subject. In this case, the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Portuguese national health service - the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS).
The Serviço Nacional de Saúde was formally created by the Portuguese State on September 15th 1979, with the publication of Law 56/79. The SNS is formed by a group of institutions and services, subordinated to the Ministério da Saúde, whose mission is to ensure the right to health, with free and universal access for all Portuguese citizens.

The new series went on sale on Monday September 15th 2014. Every year, the Dia do Serviço Nacional de Saúde (National health service day) is held on September 15th, and in 2014, the main commemoration of this anniversary was celebrated on the same date with a conference held in the Auditório da Reitoria da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

According to new guidelines, established by the Portuguese philatelic management, following removal of the Amiel, Crouzet and SMD vending machines (see previous article, also published in VARIABLE 33), the series consists of three different designs that are repeated throughout the rolls of labels.
The set design is by Henrique Cayatte, a renowned Portuguese designer and author of the Expo'98 signage and communication project. On the left, the labels include motifs that symbolize some of the key issues of the Serviço Nacional de Saúde - the right to health for all Portuguese citizens, the centros de saúde (health centres) as the primary care units of the SNS, and the médicos de familia (family doctors). The design is completed with the anniversary logo on the right of each label.
The rolls of self-adhesive labels were printed by offset, and manufactured by the Portuguese company Litho Formas Portuguesa. The size of the labels is 55 x 30 mm., and include a preprinted sequential number on the back of the waxed paper.

On the date of issue, Newvision E-Post 2000 postal kiosks (left image) allowed the direct printing of ATMs with 7 pre-programmed values (see table below) - 5 for ordinary mail or Correio normal (0.42 - 0.57 - 0.62 - 0.72 - 0.80 EUR), and two for urgent mail or Correio Azul (0.50 - 2.20 EUR), using push button selection.
However, it is possible to obtain ATMs with other values from the E-Post 2000 M postal kiosks. These kiosks are equipped with a scale, and users can buy variable value stamps according to weight, destination, and type of shipping required.

All the postal kiosks in service are fitted with black ink cartridges, although it is possible that, in error, one machine could, temporarily, have used a purple-violet ink cartridge, and issued ATMs in this colour.
