Fourth issue of the ATM set that during 2001 is dedicated to the Railways history in Spain.

The second great Railway Society that was created in Spain as a result of the Law of Railways of 1855 was the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Zaragoza y Alicante - M.Z.A. ( Railways Company from Madrid to Zaragoza and Alicante ).
This new Railway Company was constituted in 1856 also with French majority capital, supported by the bankers Rothschild, the French Credit Society Gran Central and the Spanish Marqués de Salamanca.
The M.Z.A. it was born of the union of two already existing companies : the M.A. - Compañía del Ferrocarril de Madrid a Almansa ( Railway Company from Madrid to Almansa ) and the A.Al. - Ferrocarril de Almansa a Alicante ( Railway from Almansa to Alicante ). In the following years M.Z.A. annexed other small Railway Companies, the 1892 inaugurated the new Station of Atocha in Madrid, the 1898 took place the fusion with the T.B.F. - Ferrocarril de Tarragona-Barcelona-Francia ( Tarragona-Barcelona-France Railway ) and in 1929, in the occasion of the International Exhibition of Barcelona, inaugurates the Station of France, one of the greatest of Europe and pride of the Company.

Originally constructed by the German company Hartmann ( Sächsische Maschinenfabrik Vormals Richard Hartmann, A.G., Chemnitz ) between 1882 and 1890 for the T.B.F. ( machines num. 227 to 258 ), 32 steam locomotives 030 of this model goes to the M.Z.A. Company in 1891 ( new numeration : 454 to 485 ) and finally in 1941 to RENFE ( new numeration : 2577 to 2608 ).

¿ 030, 2103  /  141, 2040 ?
The first group of digits in the denomination of the locomotives makes reference to the number and disposition of axles : The first number is the front free axles ; the second, the number of connected axles ; third, the rear free axles. The second group of numbers is the numeration, that is made after the number of cylinders. Then, the locomotive 030 - 2103 mean that it's a machine with no front free axles, 3 connected axles and no rear free axles. It has 2 cylinders and his number is 103... Check the ATM !
